普通翠鸟，又名：翠鸟、鱼虎、鱼狗、钓鱼翁、金鸟仔、蓝翡翠等。小型鸟类。体长16～17cm，寿命15年。性孤独。单独或成对活动。平时独栖在近水边的树枝或岩石上，伺机猎食。食物以小鱼为主，兼吃甲壳类和多种水生昆虫及幼虫、小型蛙类和少量水生植物。繁殖期为5～8月。每年繁殖一窝，每窝通常产卵5～7枚。分布范围广，种群数量趋势稳定。

捕鱼时，普通翠鸟也有独门绝技。它们先站在水边植物上耐心地等待，看准水中的鱼之后，便像高台跳水一样一头扎进水中，用有力的大嘴准确击中“目标”，再迅速地从水中一跃而起，飞到水边的岩石或树上。
与它们飞行的速度相反，普能翠鸟进食的速度却很慢。捕获食物后，普通翠鸟并不是急三火四地马上吞食“战利品”，而是把嘴中的活鱼在树干上用力地摔打。待活鱼被摔得半死，它们再慢条斯理地享用大餐，绅士一般。
普通翠鸟的巢，筑在沙堤、泥崖或比较陡峭的土坡上。它们要挖出一米多深隧道式的洞，巢内没有任何内垫物，只有一些松软的沙土或干草。
幼雏破壳之后，普通翠鸟每天要往返上百次喂食。一旦食物丰富，一对普通翠鸟一个夏季可以哺育两巢幼雏。
