东方白鹳，大型涉禽。体长110～128cm，体重3.9～4.5kg。冬季和春季采食植物种子、叶、草根、苔藓和少量的鱼类；夏季以鱼类为主，也吃蛙、鼠、蛇、蜥蜴、蜗牛、软体动物、节肢动物、甲壳动物等；秋季捕食蝗虫，也吃些沙砾和小石子帮助消化食物。宁静而机警。飞行或步行时举止缓慢，休息时常单足站立。3月开始繁殖，栖息于开阔而偏僻的平原、草地和沼泽地带，筑巢于高大乔木或建筑物上。每窝产卵3～5枚，白色，雌雄轮流孵卵，孵化期约30天。国家一级保护动物。被列入世界濒危鸟类红皮书。在中国东北中、北部繁殖。越冬于长江下游及以南地区。
Oriental white stork is a kind of large waterfowl which belongs to the order of Ciconiiformes. The body length is 110 ~ 128cm and the weight is 3.9 ~ 4.5kg. Mainly lives on plant seeds, leaves, grasses, moss and a small amount of fish in winter and spring;and lives on fish,frogs, rats, snakes, lizards, snails, mollusks, arthropods, crustaceans in summer, often eats gravel and small stones to help digest food in autumn. They are quiet and alert. When flying or walking, the behavior is slow,when they have rest,they often stand alone. They began breeding in March , living in open and remote plains, meadows and swamps, nesting on tall trees or buildings. Laying 3 to 5 eggs per nest, white, male and female rotation incubation, incubation period is about 30 days. They are National secondary protected animals,and is included in the World Endangered Birds Red Book. Breeding in the northeast of China,spending winter in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and south of the region.
东方白鹳属于大鸟，春、秋两季在辽河口湿地中转，最多的时候可以驻留两个多月。但是，它们到底从哪儿来、到哪儿去，一直无人知晓——大有来无影去无踪，纵横驰骋、笑傲江湖的侠士气概。也许，“英雄”不问“出处”。
经过摄影人多年仔细观察，才得出这样的结论：每年秋天，当第一场小雪飘过，东方白鹳便像一架架滑翔机姗然而至了。它们身姿优美而劲健，双翅的飞羽和尾部闪着金属的光泽。一时间，密密麻麻，铺天盖地，场面壮观，令人震撼。近距离观看：它们借助上升的气流在空中慢慢滑翔，翅膀几乎静止不动，小心翼翼地侦察适合降落的地点再徐徐落下，如凯旋的英雄！
东方白鹳身着黑白相接的羽翼，足蹬红色战靴，黑中带红的长喙。眼周呈红色，并有一条红线连着长喙。它们素雅、整洁、英武，全身红、白、黑三种颜色——即便按照国际惯例，也算得上穿着考究、品味高雅了。
东方白鹳飞行前特别有趣：它们两腿一齐向前蹦，像兔子跳那样。然后，再扇动翅膀，扶摇直上。东方白鹳纪律严明，集体活动更是如此。比如觅食。排好队，“拉网”式排查是它们捕食的独门绝技。它们的长喙在水中不停地搅动，刹那间，清亮的河水被立刻搅浑——浑水摸鱼嘛。因为缺养，鱼儿不得不露出水面呼吸，谁知却因此被擒。这时，东方白鹳以迅雷不及掩耳之势大快朵颐，直至肚鼓腰圆才肯罢休。如果遇到大鱼无法一下子吞掉，东方白鹳就会运足气力，长喙叼起大鱼用力甩到岸上。等河里的小鱼“收拾”完毕，更为隆重的饕餮大餐开始了——晕头转向的大鱼还没缓过神儿来呢，便糊里糊涂地成了盘中餐。
东方白鹳的翅膀像水墨的扇子一般漂亮，轻轻扇动，如沐清风。朴素、平凡的日常生活于它们而言，就是自由自在的欢歌和起舞。它们的翅膀又如黑白分明的琴键，于起起落落之间，弹奏着丰泽湿地、浩瀚芦荡的动人赞歌。
