太平鸟全身呈葡萄灰褐色，头部色深，呈栗褐色；头顶有一条细长呈簇状的羽冠，像凤头般高高耸立；一条黑色贯眼纹从嘴基经眼睛直至后枕，位于羽冠两侧；颏、喉为黑色；翅膀有白色翼斑，次级飞羽的羽干末端有红色滴状斑；尾端呈明黄色，像圈圈褶皱的裙摆，打开时，折扇一样漂亮。
太平鸟愿意把双脚倒挂在树枝上，叼果实。叼到果实后，再像悠“单杆”那样把自己“正”过来。它们把嘴里的果实在树干上不停地敲打，直到摔碎果壳，吃到果肉才肯消停。它们是一群贪吃的家伙，有时竟会撑到几乎不能飞行的地步。
太平鸟记忆力惊人。它们会选择固定的地点、固定的树木觅食，几乎一成不变。太平鸟性情活跃，它们不停地在树枝上跳上飞下，除了饮水之外，很少下到地面活动。太平鸟特别爱干净。夏季，每天要洗澡一次；春、秋季，每三天洗澡一次；冬季，每星期至少也得洗澡一次。太平鸟的耐寒能力极强，天气太热反而受不了。
太平鸟是中国传统的笼养鸟种之一，虽然没有动听的歌喉，但经过驯化可以完成叼纸牌、取硬币、算算术、打水等难度不大的杂耍节目。因而，太平鸟颇受养鸟、玩鸟者的喜爱。仔细想一下，在动物园里，时常会有定时上演的鸟类表演。听到高音喇叭里播放的时间表，我们拉着孩子的小手，跑得上气不接下气，去抢占露天看台上的座位。要知道，赢得阵阵掌声和欢呼声的表演中，就有太平鸟。
